WCW Thunder

Winston-Salem, North Carolina
January 24, 2001

After weeks of promos and buildup, Glacier finally made his return to WCW, joining forces with one of his true admirers, Norman Smiley. But as Smiley was in trouble, Glacier made his appearance - getting caught up in the fan adulation as Norman went down in defeat.

Cruiserweight Contender Countdown
Winner - Rey Mysterio, Jr.
Prime Time and "Sugar" Shane were the first men in the ring in this unique matchup. The two went fast and furious until Helms got the pin with the Vertabreaker. Evan Karagias was in next to face off against his former teammate. Almost as soon as he was in, the cocky Evan was another victim to Shane's patented finisher. Kidman joined the match and went back and forth with Helms, blocking the Nightmare on Helms Street, before delivering a bulldog to take over. After the Kid Krusher, it was Billy who got the pin and moved on in the match to face Yang of the Jung Dragons. The youngster from the Orient was innovative in his offense, but the former champion Kidman stayed right with his opponent, knowing the importance of the Cruiserweight Championship. As Yang brought Billy up onto the second turnbuckle, Kidman countered and dropped down with a Kid Krusher for another pinfall. Jaime Knoble charged in as the next man, trying to capitalize on Kidman's weariness. After a series of reversals, Knoble delivered a tombstone piledriver for the upset pin. Rey Mysterio, Jr. was up next, sending Jaime to the outside and following him out with a sliding tornado DDT to the floor. Rey showed off his highflying expertise before beating Knoble with a diving headbutt from the top rope. Lash Leroux was a house of fire as he entered the match, but Mysterio hit a face jam and a BroncoBuster, before finishing off the "ragin Cajun." Shannon Moore tried his luck with the red hot Mysterio, but after a few minutes, was finished off with a bridge pin. The final match was Rey against Kaz Hayashi, who entered with the advantage of being the last man on the list. As the two went to the top, Mysterio countered Kaz and brought him down with a huge bulldog for the final victory, securing a shot at the Cruiserweight Title at SuperBrawl.

Backstage, as Jeff Jarrett got smart with Hugh Morrus, the laughing man slapped The Chosen One across the face before giggling away.

Backstage, Norman Smiley spoke with someone in the dressing room, surprised and elated with the man's presence.

Interview: The Cat with Ms. Jones
The commissioner spoke about the upcoming matches for the SuperBrawl, before getting to the Thunder card. Miller booked Jarrett against Hugh Morrus, and announced Steiner and Animal against KroniK as the main event.

Backstage, Ric Flair unified his men, telling them that he had the "master plan."

Backstage, Shane Douglas told Bam Bam Bigelow that he would speak to Ric Flair about getting him into the elite group. The only thing Shane asked was for the Beast from the East to take out Rick Steiner later in the show.

"The Canadian Career Killer" Mike Awesome with Major Gunns d. "Screamin" Norman Smiley
Norman tried to dance early, but was dropped hard with a clothesline, courtesy of the Canadian Career Killer. Awesome lived up to his name as he used big power moves on the former hardcore champion. Smiley fought back against his larger opponent, but Awesome used his strength to stay on top, centering his attack on the neck of Norman. Glacier's video and music started, and the former WCW star made his way to the ringside area. While Smiley expected Glacier to come in to help, the super hero-like masked man circled the ring, signing autographs and taking pictures with the fans. The Career Killer hit an Awesome Bomb, taking the victory, before Glacier finally got into the ring, telling Norman that he would be there to watch his back. Glacier posed in the ring after the match.

Mean Gene Interview: Glacier and Norman Smiley
The returning Glacier told Gene that he and Norman would fight for all that was good, as Smiley staggered after his beating moments before.

Backstage, Luger and Bagwell told Crowbar that they were giving him another chance at joining the elite.

Interview: Kwee Wee with Paisley
Kwee Wee once again challenged anyone from the back to come out, before pulling a fan from the crowd and destroying him with a piledriver in the ring. The eccentric maniac got the mic and once again asked Ric Flair to change his mind about letting him in.

Mean Gene Interview: KroniK
Bryan Clark said that even though Animal and Steiner were in two of the greatest tag teams of the last two decades, KroniK was ready to take them on. Adams brought DDP, Rick Steiner, and The Cat into camera view, challenging the Road Warrior and Big Poppa to bring some friends.

"The Chosen One" Jeff Jarrett d. Hugh Morrus
Jarrett stated that he had Flair's army watching his back. Hugh charged the ring with an evil smile on his face, trying to psych out Jeff before the bell. Out on the floor, The Chosen One used a steel chair on Morrus, weakening the leg for the figure four. The former General dropped an elbow from the top as The Wall came to ringside. As the referee stopped Jarrett from getting the guitar, Wall entered and destroyed Morrus with a chokeslam, setting Jeff up for the victory. After the match, Wall and Jarrett continued the attack, until DDP ran in from the crowd for the save.

Big Ron Harris with Heavy D d. Crowbar with Daffney
Big Ron pounded on Crowbar, as Daffney screamed into her new megaphone at ringside. The former hardcore champion made a comeback with a tackle from the top rope, but only got a two-count. Out on the floor, Crowbar was sent hard into the guardrail on both sides of the ring. Big Ron continued to use his size to overpower his opponent, but Crowbar fought back again, until The Harris Boys made the switcharoo, giving Heavy D the pinfall win on behalf of his brother.

Mean Gene Interview: Rick Steiner
The Dog Faced Gremlin told Bam Bam Bigelow that he was going to fall to Steiner later in the show.

In a pre-recorded segment, Mike Tenay spoke with an orthopedic surgeon about the prognosis and recovery time of Sid Vicious after his devastating injury at Sin.

Rick Steiner d. Bam Bam Bigelow
In this battle of tough guys, Rick threw Bigelow around like he was a Cruiserweight, delivering some of his patented suplexes. Bam Bam shook off the cobwebs, dropping a headbutt between Steiner's legs to slow down the action. The Beast hit a flying headbutt from the top, but Rick was able to get the shoulder up at two. Turning the tide again, Steiner went to the turnbuckle and clamped on his trademark bulldog for the win.

Backstage, The CEO and his men met up with The Cat and Ms. Jones in the hallway. As Big Poppa tried to go after Miller, Flair stopped him, only to drill the commissioner himself with a pair of brass knuckles. When the cameraman went into the dressing room that the group had just exited, DDP and Big Sexy were found knocked out on the floor, obvious victims of a vicious attack.

In the dressing room, Shane Douglas attacked Rick Steiner as he was trying to help Page and Nash.

KroniK d. Road Warrior Animal and "Big Poppa Pump" Scott Steiner with Midajah
Animal and Clark started the match, challenging each other's power as the irresistible force met up against the immovable object. KroniK doubled on the Road Warrior, but Animal was able to make the tag with the champion, who was treated to a full nelson slam by Brian Adams. Steiner and Animal trapped Adams in their corner, working him over on their side of the ring. After Clark finally got the hot tag, he blasted Scott, and took Animal down with the Meltdown. While Luger and Bagwell battled with The Cat on the outside, KroniK hit the High Time for the win on Animal. After the match, a brawl ensued in the ring, with "team Flair" leaving everyone laying as Thunder came to an end.
